What to Expect When Using Medical Transport Services

If you've never arranged a medical transport, you probably have many questions, from "How much will it cost?" to "What happens at the end of the transport?" While transport services can vary depending on the provider, here's an overview of what to expect when using medical transport services from SentinelMED.

Let’s start at the beginning. If you are looking for medical transport, it’s likely because you or a loved one can’t travel independently or need help traveling after an accident, injury, or planned medical procedure.

When you choose SentinelMED, here’s what you can expect at each step.

Initial contact. The SentinelMED team transports patients 24/7 around the globe, and you'll receive a prompt response to your inquiry, question, or concern.

Review of the patient’s medical condition and records. SentinelMED’s medical professionals examine medical records, speak with treating physicians, and gather information from family members. This information is used to determine the most appropriate mode of transport.

Transport recommendations. The SentinelMED team includes logistics and medical professionals who work together to coordinate patient care during transport. They will recommend transport options based on the patient’s medical needs, comfort, safety, and health insurance coverage. In many cases, SentinelMED transports patients on commercial airlines, which can be more cost-effective and faster than using an air ambulance for transport.

Contract review. Our team will make sure you understand the details of our medical transport contract and answer any questions you have.

Matching the patient with a medical escort, if recommended. SentinelMED provides medical escorts who can provide care for patients during travel. Our medical escorts are physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurses trained or experienced in emergency and travel medicine. We pair patients with medical escorts based on health care needs, native language, and cultural concerns.

Transport. SentinelMED may use ground ambulance, air ambulance, commercial airlines, or a combination of all three, depending on what is best for the patient and the distance that must be covered.

If needed, a medical escort will travel with the patient during every stage of transport. That could include meeting the patient when they are discharged from a medical facility, helping them at the airport with check-in and security screening, flying with them, and accompanying them to their home or a receiving medical facility.

During every stage of travel, our medical escorts will provide necessary medical care, such as administering supplemental oxygen and medicine and checking vital signs.

Transfer after transport. As part of a patient transport plan, our logistics professionals will arrange transportation from the airport to the patient’s final destination. If a medical escort is traveling with a patient, the medical escort will transfer all medical records, equipment, and medication to the person designated to receive them.
